Meet Children's Book Author, Sharon Baldwin

1. Tell us about yourself and what you do.

I'm a children's book author, turned publisher and book designer. I also teach workshops for kids and adults. My chapter book series "The Gardeneers" is set in a school garden, and I followed that up with an alphabet book for younger readers called "P is for Permaculture." My next book is coming out in a few months, called "In My Mud Kitchen."

2. Why did you decide to start your own children’s book publishing company?

I started off self-publishing because writing about permaculture for kids was seen as too niche for larger publishers. It's a tough business to break into if you're not a celebrity or established author with a fanbase, so I started a publishing company to help amplify the voices of other emerging writers and artists writing about the environment, nature and creativity. I also love the collaborative process of bringing a book to life.

3. Where do you draw inspiration from for your children’s books?

So far, all of my books have taken inspiration from observing children playing. My own two kids are seven and ten and I've taught numerous workshops and led playgroups over the years. I especially enjoy seeing the pure wonder of children experiencing the natural world. During the lockdowns of the last several years, bushwalking and spending time in our garden really helped save our sanity (and kept us from being glued to our screens). So I write books now that try to inspire kids to be outside, get their hands dirty and use their imaginations.

4. Tell us about some of the community projects and events you’re involved in.

Recently I set up my own office at Good Earth Bookshop in Wentworth Falls which is a lovely community space. I've been running their children's storytime and craft sessions on Thursday mornings as well as occasional workshops. I also teach after-school drama classes in Lawson, have been involved in the Edible Garden Trail at Lawson Public School, and I'm really excited that I'll be working with other volunteers at Lyttleton to set up a mud kitchen in the garden.

5. Where is your favourite place to go bushwalking?

We're a bit spoilt for choice here in Lawson. I love taking my kids to Frederica Falls, especially in the spring when you can find lots of tadpoles. If I'm going by myself, Dante's Glen is one of my favourite spots to sit and write.

6. Where can we learn more about you?

For more about my company you can visit https://looseparts.com.au/ or follow us on Instagram @loosepartspress (I also have a personal instagram @shazinthemtns but it's mostly just my kids and my food!)
